Petition for zebra crossing at Blackburn school (From This Is Lancashire)

A zebra crossing ??
That's old hat.
I grew up with Belisha beacons, then Zebra crossings, then it went to Pelican crossings.
We now have Puffin crossings for pedestrians.
Toucan crossings to accomodate cyclists and Pegasus crossings to accomodate horse riders.

Best way is to look right, then left, and then right again.
If all is clear then cross.
It is pointless saying that you had right of way on a crossing when you're laid up in hospital with a broken leg because driver wasn't concentrating.

I was brought up using the old idea of looking for a safe time to cross. I think most of the children have the ability to use their eyes. Also most of the children will get to school by car or bus.

When do you ever get traffic moving more than 20mph on Haslingden Rd or anywhere from Benny St to Guide.? Not very often especially when the kids are being dropped off and picked up. They did all that work for a new school and did nothing to restructure the road system around that area to compensate for the increase in traffic. Not just the extra from school but the whole area is far different today than what those roads were designed for. If you allow these developments to go on in this town you have to grow with it or the inbalance with cause a porblems in lots of ways.

Remember why they built the new fire station where they did only a few hundred yards from the old site instead of an out of town location free from built up traffic.? Answer. Because it will be ideally placed where it is.
due to the "NEW RING ROAD" ha ha ha. How long as the new fire station been open now..? And they still haven't knocked the old police staion down...they will never finish that imaginary ring road. And its the unfinished ring road that is probably responsible for most traffic build up around the town. If you had builders in you wouldn't want them starting other jobs while your still up to your waste in knocked off plaster. They need to be consentrating on growing with the developments that are the towns future in education and business..

As I understand it, the demolition of the police station building cannot begin until the new spiritualist church is built and they have moved from their old building. And as that has only just been given planning permission, it will be some time yet before the road construction starts. Something to do with the way Listed Building Consent to demolish is gained.

It stops listed buildings being demolished for "schemes" which then subsequently dont happen. A contract has to be in place for the construction of the road before it will be allowed to be demolished and a contract for that cannot be let yet because the compulsory purchase process is not yet complete.

As for Haslingden Road, didnt they just build a new pelican crossing up there by The Observatory? Why do they need a zebra outside the school? Im sure the residents would love that... a bleedin' great flashing crossing outside their windows that will only be used by pedestrians for 5 hours a week and only during term time.

It is not a Zebra crossing that is needed on Haslingden Road ,It is a roundabout any one who drives a car will know the nightmare of exiting Observatory Road onto Haslingden road and not just at peak times the council planners are a joke!!

Beggars belief the type of idiots that we have on the planning committee at Blackburn Council.

They cannot justify the spending...so how can they justify the placing of a crossing directly outside the old hospital entrance...there will have been cost implications for that. Does it get used...infrequently, is it well placed...definitely not given the issues it causes those leaving & entering the hospital site, including existing bus stops directly opposite & next to the same entrance. This causes major traffic problems in the evenings & mornings. Why wasn't it placed further down the road closer to the school where it would have been used??

If you can justify the cost of placing a crossing a few hundred yards up the road that doesn't get used then one for a school will.
