MP should live in flat he owns

IT made me so angry to read about my MP claiming even more money from the taxpayer by claiming cash for renting a flat in London when he already owns one (“I’m playing by the rules says rent storm MP”, The Bolton News, October 20).

Did David Crausby learn nothing from the expenses scandal? It doesn’t matter that he’s found a loophole in the rules that means he can do this legally.

It is totally against the spirit of the new rules about what MPs can claim for. It makes him look greedy and arrogant.

He should live in the flat he owns which, incidentally, will have been paid for through his very handsome salary — again at the taxpayers’ expense.

It is a slap in the face to all the hard-working people who are struggling to pay their own rent or mortgage at the moment. I particularly enjoyed the quote from him which said: “These are allowances rather than expenses”.

Surely this should win a prize for the most outrageous attempt ever at spin from a politician.

why do you think most of them become MPs in the first place? Not to represent the constituents, that is certain. Most of them see it as an easy way to grab whatever they can, whilst at the same time telling everyone that times are hard and we must all pull together. Sometimes morals should override taking advantage of loopholes, but that would be asking these MPs not to be greedy and to think of others. That is not in their ability.

Why does this remind me of all the big companies that pay no tax? Do those who create the rules deliberately set them up with loopholes that they know they can exploit? How can they condemn those that exploit the benefits system when they do exactly the same? Legal it might be, immoral it most definitely is and our those who represent our parliamentry system bring shame on our country.

He is such an ineffective MP would anybody notice if he resigned? At best I would say he is bending the rules, at worst I would say he can’t get his snout out of the trough! Like many of his colleagues, “old dog new tricks” honesty and members of parliament whole new concept.

you know this absolutely galls me. i rent privately from a very understanding landlord but earlier this year i got a letter from the council to say that they were reducing the rent that they would pay and when i went to ask them about this i was told to find somewhere cheaper to live (no support there.) firstly i would like to say i have worked and payed taxes, income and council all my working life and when i neede some help no one especially bolton council were not there (if you can understand the letters that they send)

If i misunderstand the point please correct me BUT i thought public service was a privelege and something that that a person wanted to do and not a free meal ticket that our MPs see with all contempt to treat tax payers.

It seems to me that they are on an ego trip.

I know that people have to be re-imbursed for their time but that should be travel only.
