A BLACKBURN couple celebrated 50 golden years by raising money for a children’s hospice.

Blackburn Council playworker Barbara Perkins, 69, and her husband Michael, who drives a schoolbus at Oakhill School in Whalley, met in 1959 at a St Mary’s College school leavers event.

The couple, who have two children and four grandchildren, marked their anniversary with a celebration at their East Lancashire Road home.

The party with family on friends saw £350 raised for Derian House Children’s Hospice when the couple asked for donations instead of gifts.

Michael said: “It was a Saturday, the same day we were married because your 50-year anniversary always falls on the same day. It comes full circle.

“We have everything we could want so we just wanted people’s company and a little donation for charity.”
