Lions boss backs under fire Carnival Queen

A CARNIVAL queen has been given a vote of confidence by the event's chairman amid allegations that she slapped a teenager at work.

Romi Jane Young was suspended from her job as a leisure attendant and lifeguard at Hyndburn Sports Centre over claims involving a 15-year-old work experience boy.

Hyndburn Council has suspended her pending the results of an internal investigation. Carnival organisers Accrington Lions are also looking into the incident.

Carnival chairman Ray Pullinger stressed he could not comment for the group officially but said he personally had every faith in Romi.

He said: "We will support the Carnival Queen while looking into the incident - but I cannot make any comment on behalf of the Lions at this time.

"My personal view however is that there is a lot more to this incident than meets the eye. As far as I'm concernced, Romi is a very nice young girl who does her best in everything she does."

President of Accrington Lions, Tony Clarkson said the incident had only come to their attention in the last two days and they were still looking into what had happened.

Romi's job includes lifeguard duty in the swimming pools.

She is thought to have been called to attend a disciplinary hearing this week when she was told the investigation was still ongoing.

Joe Balko, chief executive of Hyndburn Leisure Trust, said: "Allegations that an incident took place between an employee of the Trust and a youth who was not employed by the Trust, are being investigated.

"In accordance with our discipline and grievance procedures the employee has been suspended from duty pending investigation. While investigations are ongoing the Trust is not in a position to make further comment."

Romi, from Accrington, led the parade at the Carnival in June last year after beating 25 other hopefuls to be crowned Accrington's Carnival Queen and is in the last few weeks of her reign She was unavailable for comment.

Well done Romi, you should have punched the little weasel. As an ex boss of Romi,i can tell you, she is a good person who always puts others beore herself. Why should she have to put up with any sort of ignorance? Hyndburn sports centre, you should be ashamed, you should be backing your employee to the hilt.

It's funny when you grow up with someone who repeatidly denies having multi cultural parents, until they did something wrong then it's ok for her to throw "I slapped him because he made a racist comment" It's pathetic! She needs to grow up and take responsiblity for what she has done but hey!, I suppose she'll get away with it because of who she is
