Joyrider takes bus from depot
TARGETED: The Rossendale Transport Citysmart bus on a Manchester to Bacup service
TARGETED: The Rossendale Transport Citysmart bus on a Manchester to Bacup service

A £130,000 bus was stolen from a Rossendale depot and taken on a joyride to Bolton.

And the Rossendale Transport Ltd Volvo vehicle was given a £60 parking ticket after the thief abandoned it.

The single decker low-floor Citysmart bus had been taken from the Rawtenstall depot in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police have launched an investigation and bosses at Rossendale Transport said they believed the thief was a 'professional' who had driven buses before.

Police said the thief approached the depot, attempted to start up one bus by following specific procedures, but only managed to drive it 20ft before failing.

He then jumped into another bus which he damaged when he drove into some railings.

The man then drove the bus, registration P053 0BP, to Tong Moor Road, Bolton, where it was found at 8.30am yesterday complete with parking ticket.

The stolen Citysmart bus is used on the Bacup to Manchester route.

Barry Drelincourt, commercial director of Rossendale Transport Ltd said: "The bus was due to be one of the first buses out in the morning so it had been parked at the front of the bus station.

"It is obvious, looking at the CCTV footage, that the man has driven a bus before.

"We have seen shots of the person driving it and he seems quite professional - and it's not easy to know how to do that.

"Nothing like this has happened for a long time.

"We've got the bus back. There were a few scratches on the back but it was driven quite well.

"The damage is not unreasonable."

PC Phil Buck added: "All modern buses are fitted with a number of CCTV cameras.

"Anyone foolish enough to break into a bus in this area can anticipate swift action against them as their picture will be immediately available to the police."

The bus was stolen between 2.10am and 4.45am on Tuesday.

Its destination in Bolton is spelt TONGE Moor Road (main road in from Rossendale and Burnley): just ask your colleagues on the Bolton News.

I can just imagine the sort of high powered executive job you must have when you can't spell and you don't seem to be able to operate your caps lock key.

bystander is correct. Blakey is the name of the character which spoke the line.

This is not the first time it has happened. A few years ago when I lived in Rossendale a neighbour of mine took a bus from the Rawtenstall depot and headed for Bolton. He also tried it with a fire engine!
Billy Hadden strikes again?

The problem is that the bus depot is far too small for the amount of buses Rossendale transport has in rawtenstall.
The company has no choice but to leave buses part outside on the bus station over night. And anyone who knows how to start a bus it is easy pickings.
The sooner the company move to their new depot the better I guest.
