Gang kicked and punched man outside railway station

A GANG of thugs kicked and stamped on a man as he lay on the floor.

British Transport Police (BTP) are appealing for witnesses to the attack at Manchester Victoria Station in the early hours of March 16.

The incident occurred near to the taxi rank at the front of the station between 3am and 3.30am.

A 27-year-old man from Walkden was waiting for a taxi with his girlfriend having been on a night out in Manchester.

They were approached by a group of around seven men who became abusive.

One of the men then walked over to the victim and punched him twice, knocking him to the ground. The other members of the group then began to kick and stamp on him.

A couple of bystanders intervened in the assault and the gang left.

A spokesman for BTP said: "The victim received a number of injuries, including a damaged eye and eardrum, bruising to his temple and he lost a tooth. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

"The group of men are described as white, in their late teens to early twenties, possibly with London accents. They were also said to be singing Tottenham Hotspur football songs."

The first offender, who punched the victim to the ground, is described as white male, with spiky hair.

Another of the offenders is described as a chubby male, wearing black clothing, black boots and shoes. A further male is described wearing a red waistcoat type jacket and white t-shirt. The rest of the group are described as wearing regular going out' clothes.

Police are appealing for anyone who was at the station who witnessed the incident to come forward. Officers would specifically like to speak to the couple who helped the victim and intervened in the assault. They left details but these were lost by the victim.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to contact PC Andrew Baxter at BTP on Freefone 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

No CCTV on the taxi rank?
Or was it not working?

Thats awful. I'd hate to be at Victoria station any time past 11pm, anyway. The station doesn't exactly inspire security.
