MP Since - 2010 Majority - 3,090 Born - 1966, Partner (Kimberley Whitehead), 2 children.
Education - St Christopher's High School, Accrington.
Previous Occupation - Local politician.
Personal Overview - Experience local politician who successfully resisted Conservative advances elsewhere in industrial Lancashire to hold this seat for the Labour Party. He has extensive knowledge of the area having been raised locally in Baxenden and served the community for many years as a local councillor at the Borough and County tiers. He was formerly Leader of the Opposition on Hyndburn District Council prior to his election as a MP. Judging from his election material he his likely to line up on the centre-left of the Labour Party - his literature points to a strongly partisan political attitude towards the Tories whom he accuses of seemingly 'delight[ing] in the misery of others, as though nastiness and greed was an incentive for the 1980's unemployed'. He was criticised in February 2010 for being in technical breech of Council regulations for failing to declare an interest in a proposal he raised at the Council to complete pothole repairs on local unadopted streets of which he was a resident (Hodder Street, Accrington).
Political History - Councillor, Hyndburn Borough Council (Peel ward), Councillor, Lancashire County Council (Accrington South Ward), Opposition Leader, Hyndburn Borough Council, Member for Hyndburn (2010-). Opposition Assistant Whip (2010-).
Characteristics - Partisan local politician elevated to the national Parliament at the 2010 General Election - his successful candidacy was colourfully supported by local football club Chairman Ilyas Khan (Accrington Stanley FC).
