MP Since - 1997 Majority - 4,103 Born - 17/06/1946, Married, 2 sons.
Education - Derby Grammar School, Bury Technical College.
Previous Occupation - Engineer, AEEU Convener.
Personal Overview - Member with an Old Labour style grounding as an union activist for the AEU. A long term Councillor for Bury, who has been improving his local Bolton roots by serving on the Bolton North Police Consultative Committee. Spent his first term pursuing local interests - the promotion of the local college's case for university status, and efforts to improve the manufacturing base in Bolton - a change in course is not expected. Typically quiet backbencher who is loyal to the Government.
Political History - Councillor, Bury District Council (1979-92), Member for Bolton North East (1997-). Member of the Administration Select Committee (1999-2001). Member of the Social Security Select Committee (2000-01). Member of the Defence Select Committee (2001-). Joint Vice-Chairman, Engineering All Party Group. Chairman of the North West Committee (2009-).
Characteristics - Largely unknown quantity who has a political upbringing in the Trades Unions, and Local Government. Trustee of employer's pension scheme, and former member of local Police consultative committee. Age upon entering the Commons would suggest time only for a backbench role.

Education - Southport Technical College, University of Hull (BSc, PhD, DSc, FRSC).
Previous Occupation - Lecturer, Salford University (1966-78), Senior Lecturer (1978-88), Reader (1986-97).
Personal Overview - Internationally recognised researcher (Organic Chemistry) who has come into the political sphere relatively late in life. With age an effective bar to promotion, and an academic rather than political background he tends to display an independence of thought untypical of the New Model Labour Party. As a regular, though not inveterate, rebel he came to Westminster seeking widespread renationalisation of public utilities, not a topic of favoured conversation with the Blair Government. With a keen interest in education and science issues, he is also concerned with housing and social policy. A latecomer to Westminster he wants to legalise cannabis, and is Chairman of the relevant All Party Group. Now serving in his third Parliament he was the beneficiary of the deselection of David Young for the 1997 General Election (the only straight Labour deselection at that election). Cited by his detractors as being too long in the tooth and politically inactive it was surprising that the subsequent replacement was then rather non-partisan and frankly old (aged 56 on his Commons entry).
Political History - Councillor, Bolton (MBC) (1977-98). Member for Bolton South East (1997-). Member of the Environmental Audit Select Committee (1997-2000). Member of the Science & Technology Select Committee (2000-2007), Chairman, All Party Group on Drug Misuse. Vice-Chairman, Scientific All Party Group. Member of the Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Select Committee (2007-09), Science and Technology Select Committee (2009-).
Characteristics - Highly regarded as a demonstration lecturer - skills which may prove transferable into public relations. Political service likely to be from the backbenches.
Member of Parliament for Bolton West
MP Since - 1997 Majority - 2,064 Born - 09/05/1968, Married, 1 son, 3 daughters.
Education - Sutton High School, Westminster School, Queen's College, Oxford (BA PPE), London School of Economics (MSc Econ).
Previous Occupation - Economics Writer, The Guardian (1990-94), Deputy Head of Inflation Report Division, Bank of England (1994-97). MSF Member.
Personal Overview - New Labour 'starlet' whose future appears exceptionally bright. Talent recognised at an early age with high profile work at The Guardian before moving on to the Bank of England. Her apprenticeship on the backbenches proved to be short-lived as the Blair Government searches for the next generation of ministers. Entered Government following the 2001 Election as Economic Secretary to the Treasury. Her political career has largely followed Yvette Cooper MP (Pontefract & Castleford), and though into Government somewhat later, it will an interesting comparison between their two separate paths. Her PPS appointment to the now sidelined NIck Brown, and her subsequent Treasury appointments indicates a political allegiance to Gordon Brown. Political interests lie with economic policy and education. A practising Catholic, she had her two children during her first Parliamentary term. Should the Conservatives regain their former political strength a new, and safer, seat would be needed to continue her political career. Was weakened politically in early 2005 by the controversy surrounding several school teachers who had been appointed despite being on the sex offenders register. Was moved to take over a new role covering the Local Government and Housing responsibilities formally held by John Prescott in a renamed Department for Communities & Local Government. She was criticised in January 2007 as a former Education Secretary for moving her son from a State to a Private School. Remained in the Cabinet in June 2007, moving to the Transport portfolio. Announced in September 2008 that she would stand down as a Cabinet Minister at the next Government reshuffle in order to focus more on her family life. It had also been known that she was unhappy with the Government's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill (she is a devout Catholic). Announced her intention to stand down as an MP at the next General Election.
Political History - Member for Bolton West (1997-). Secretary of the Parliamentary Labour Party Treasury Committee (1997-99). Member of the Treasury Select Committee (1997-98), Member of Public Accounts Select Committee (2002-04). PPS to Rt. Hon Nick Brown MP (MAFF) (1998-2001), Economic Secretary to the Treasury (2001-02), Financial Secretary to the Treasury (2002-04). Minister of State at the Cabinet Office (2004). Secretary of State for Education & Skills (2004-06). Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government (with responsibility for Housing & Local Government) (2006-07). Minister for Women (2006-07). Secretary of State for Transport (2007-08). She will stand down at the next General Election.
Characteristics - Articulate Member who has already shown political effectiveness with campaigns for women's training and education, and against the BNP in East London. Should her early potential be realised at Westminster, and Labour manages to hold the political centre-ground, then a long ministerial career seems inevitable. Privy Counsellor (2006).
