IT’S a shame for Channel Five. They tried but, for me they’ve failed.
I’m of course talking about Big Brother. The celebrity version was a fair success, but I think where some half-known personalities are put together in one place there’s bound to be some interest.
But the regular series is still the flop that Channel Four dumped last year after 10 long years.
It’s a tired concept and no-one wants to waste their precious time watching a bunch of no-bodies sleeping, cleaning their teeth and making cups of tea.
The odd spat heats things up a bit, but the fact remains that we don’t know these people, so whether they stay together, split up, sleep in separate beds or nominate their best mates we’re not interested any more.
I must admit they have picked a better group of people for us this year — not so many outrageous extroverts selected just for their weirdness — but it’s still a worn-out formula nonetheless.
Pamela Anderson was the glue holding the housemates together, and now that she’s gone, all the egos are starting to form and I think we may have unleashed a few monsters.
It’s time to tune out of Big Brother and tune into Strictly Come Dancing, which launched the new series last weekend and is on fine form as usual.
