Last Saturday night’s Murder Mystery (Murder on’t Moor) at the Playhouse was a very successful event, raising money for the Wharfeside Auditorium Development fund.
A group of Playhouse actors recreated the crime – the murder of the chairman of a local rambling society, found dead on Ilkley Moor. The event was organised by the Playhouse’s hard-working Social Committee members; special thanks must go to them for the splendid picnic banquet they provided, while guests questioned the ‘suspects’ and worked hard at solving the dastardly crime.
There will be a special charity concert at the Playhouse on Saturday by Ilkley-based singer songwriter Rupert Stroud. He will be performing a mixture of rock, indie and acoustic music in the Wharfeside Theatre from 7.30pm in a concert to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. All profits from the event are being donated to the charity, and Rupert is dedicating the concert to his grandmother, who died two years ago after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. This will be the first of a series of fundraising events for the charity. Tickets cost £12 (no concessions), and are available from the Playhouse box office.
The Playhouse Board of Trustees has recently appointed Marcia Hughes as a community trustee.
Marcia, who lives in Ilkley, has an impressive track record as a broadcaster with the BBC and as a business and communications consultant. As the mother of two young children, she is particularly keen to see the Playhouse introduce daytime shows for younger audiences and their families, an idea that is already being developed.
The final play of this season, running from July 4 to 14, is The Years Between by Daphne du Maurier. Set during the Second World War, this engaging drama concerns a woman whose husband, an MP, has gone missing, presumed dead. She finds a new purpose in life when she takes on her husband’s political duties and begins a new relationship. But then her life is thrown into disarray when her husband reappears. Directed by Dick Hebbert and Dermot Hill, the play features Rachel Conyers as Diana Wentworth and Dick Hebbert as her husband.
The Playhouse set builders have this week been putting the finishing touches to the impressive scenery – the library/sitting room of a country house.
