THE greatest double act on the small screen at the moment has returned triumphantly to Sky One.

I refer, or course, to Hugh Laurie and Robert Sean Leonard as Dr Gregory House and Dr James Wilson.

The Waldorf and Statler of medical dramas were in top form as House resumed from a mid season break.

On the surface House shouldn’t be too different from many other US imports. But the tightly-written scripts and strong characters that have been allowed to develop over the six series make it quality viewing.

Hugh Laurie as the evil genius House is a revelation. He’s so good you forget Jeeves and Wooster, Blackadder and all the other great comedy shows he’s been in. The American accent is faultless but the comic timing remains sublime.

For House novices, Dr Wilson is his only true friend and, in best Odd Couple style, the two are now sharing an apartment.

There is a love-hate relationship based on doing each other down at every opportunity, particularly where the pursuit of the opposite sex is concerned.

Every episode features a seemingly impossible case in which House and his team must diagnose and save the patient but that’s almost incidental to the interplay between the cast regulars.
