Burnley footballer Clarke Carlisle narrowly failed to score a hat-trick on Channel 4's quiz show Countdown today.
The defender, 30, had been leading throughout his third appearance on the show but conceded a last minute winner when his opponent bagged the last condundrum.
That left the final score 89-86, ending Carlisle's run on the show.
On Wednesday, he had seen off reigning champion Adam Guest 89-55 to move into the champions chair.
That win ensured the show's famous teapot trophy will take pride of place among the Turf Moor silverware.
And yesterday he won 101-78, breaking the 100-point barrier with the final conundrum, 'massively'.
After his debut win, Carlisle, 30, told the show's host, Jeff Stelling: "I can't say it's better than winning a big football game - but it's up there!
"It's a lifelong ambition. I'm just delighted to be here," he added during the show.
Stelling noted: "Your team-mates can't take the mickey out of you too much now."
Carlisle, who admits he has been an "addict" of the show since childhood, had previously failed an audition during a long-term cruciate ligament injury lay-off from January 2001 to September 2002.
But he was crowned "Britain's Brainiest Footballer" in an ITV show hosted by former Countdown number-cruncher Carol Vorderman in January 2002, seeing off a panel of 12 including England's World Cup-winning full-back George Cohen and legendary Newcastle striker Malcolm "Supermac" Macdonald.
And, after coming through the audition process successfully this time round, he proved his credentials with a slew of impressive words.

Breaking news - The Dingles have added a Teapot to their trophy room (no kidding) - its the first for 50 years!

You could say it is a COUNTDOWN to their relegation!

Meanwhile those attending the University of football lecture on defending at t'turf tonight have been asked not to bring the Villa video with them.

Pity, if only he could put that intelligence of his to greater use by working out how to defend. And speaking of teapot trophies in the burnley cabinet, i imagine it'll look right at home alongside the fizzy pop play off trophy.

It's simply that you seem to spout the same whingeing, down-putting moaning totally dis-satisfied comments all the time continually harking back to the 70s which had it's highs & lows (Leeds at Elland Road but phew Wimbledon F.A. cup). Just for once get rid of your NORI Brick thoughts and a least give a little credit sometime. Furtehr to Carlisle it's not just him to blame why not look at Jensen, some of the utter juvenile errors he's made (Sunday again) & the continual posing with the ball followed by long high punts which inevitably come back (where are the quick throw outs starting up attacks that we see from like of Petr Cech, van der Saar & Almunia) are among a lot of other points to consider. PLUS last year we had such a small squad that players were forced to play week in week out forming a great bond and knowledge of each others movements - Now we've got Mix N' Match & not much time to settle down. But notwithstanding a majority of this as you say "C**p team got us to the Premier and working hard to keep us there
As i keep saying Im not a closet Rovers fan. Im a Claret since 1974 on the Longside and in good weather the Beehole End. I hark back to the 70s cos thats the standards to set and demand of the current squad. They are not battlers and have tarnished the memory of the 1960 side : this is the silent majority speaking. As for Carlisle : hes total c**p, lacking basic defensive skills. Statistics dont lie : our defensive record is appalling. A few spectacular interventions and the odd good game at home should not divert us from the harsh truth : hes naive, inept, short of pace, poor in the air and essentially a total embarrassment. If you want to have expectations at the level of PNE thats up to you and rests on the fact you are suffering from a poverty of aspirations caused by us bumming around the lower divisions for god knows how long. This Summer is the time for Brian to clear him and the rest of squad crap out and start afresh. Theres about 6 of em Id keep and we all know who they are. Im afraid Carlisle's word knowledge and his footballing ability are inversely proportional ! Ossy Claret

It's just that I'm an eternal optimist with a cup half full & when I keep seeing negative & harping back to the past I feel I have to have a go. Like all true Clarets (and so it should be) I just like & hope to see the team do well. Memories for me have also been bitter & sweet and as the years pass it's very much like the hot summers, those are all you remember. Wembley will be the same, but when we've manage dto stay up the memory in a few years will be the beating of Man. Utd, Everton and what should have been at the Eastlands. All good fun part of being one of the "Family of Clarets" Not one of the Mercenary Spenders of other people's money existing down the M65
OK. You are entitled to your view and right about mixed results in the 70s. I just dont rate many of this team esp the back 4 and think we can do better. Yiou have to continually improve inn the PL or else its curtains. Re promotion : we were somewhat scring in the playoffs on the last day and a narrow 1-0 win the Final. Great buzz but dont read too much into it! Ossy Claret

I cant understand some of the comments on regarding CC. Its nothing to do with football , its nothing to do with him being a defender. He has had an ambition away from football to do something that is a keen interest to him. Why not just pass on good comments regarding this and leave the football out of it untill we play saturday ;0). UTC

Carlisle is an intelligent man, widely regarded as the 'cleverest' footballer, he's not getting any younger, or any better as a player, but he has intellect and foresight. . He's profiling himself. He's articulate and can present himself in a way that can stand scrutiny. . I hope he can further improve his image. . Good on you CC. I reckon you'll have a future after relegation LOL!!! . A. Hes making a big enough fool of himself week in week out; doing this just makes things worse
B. Hes not a Premier League defender. He appears in a team that is currently in the Premier League and short on funds compared with its rivals. Please stop breaching the Trades Descriptions Act.
Why am I like this : cos he and hes fellow pile of c**p are tarnishing the good name of the 1960 Championship winning side and reducing the status of that famous shirt to that of a piece of bog paper.
Sorry for being blunt : theres loads of us like this .
