IN TOWN: Jimmy Carr
There was a boisterous capacity Saturday evening crowd for one of the You Must Be Joking comedy festival’s biggest names.
The ubiquitous TV star’s Rapier Wit show consisted of conventional stand-up sections interspersed with on-screen presentations where Carr uses cartoon images to explore such subjects as celebrities, possible content for an autobiography and embarrassing situations.
Carr’s clipped tones and flawless delivery provided a counterpoint to some of his material, which as always with Carr took on subject matters which stretched the limits of comedy.
The majority of the show was tightly scripted, packed with gags and consistently funny and his interaction with audience members showed a lightning quick comedy mind.
At the end of each half Carr invited questions from the audience, which added to the spontaneity.
The audience was receptive throughout with obvious and deep set rivalries revealed when Carr divided them into cheering for Blackburn or Burnley.
