Club owner's plans to boost Accrington nightlife

Club owner's plans to boost Accrington nightlife Club owner's plans to boost Accrington nightlife

A NIGHTCLUB owner hopes to persuade town centre bosses to get on board with a scheme to revitalise Accrington’s nightlife.

Level One owner Leon Kelly said plans to create outdoor marquee events in pedestrianised areas were the key to attracting revellers back to the town.

The Warner Street licensee also hopes to persuade more bar owners to make the switch to plastic glasses.

Mr Kelly, who was the first licensee to join the plastic glass campaign in partnership with police, has now been asked to appear at a town centre meeting this month to put forward his ideas.

He hopes to persuade officers and councillors that pedestrianised events, with lighting, entertainment and drinks stalls will prove to be a draw.

He said: “An open-air event, properly managed, would give some atmosphere back to Accrington.

"There are a number of small streets that could be cordoned off without much effect on traffic.

"The idea would be for people to begin their evenings in an open-air marquee, but not for it to continue too late.

“I would say it should go on 7pm to midnight, then people will move on to the bars.

“If the idea is taken up, I am hoping to get other licensees in the town involved to provide the stalls.

"If more would join the plastic glass campaign, that would be a plus, because providing a safe night out is the best attraction for people.

"Then we just need good acts.”

Hyndburn deputy leader Clare Pritchard, will be at the meeting on August 11.

She said: “The town centre is vital to the borough’s economy and we want to make it thriving and successful."

Most popular pub in Accy by a mile in my experience is the Peel Park. If landlords followed this formula, rather than the lager-lout Stella in plastic glasses plan suggested here, then maybe more people would frequent their establishments.

Will the landlords pick up the tab for cleaning, policeing etc etc etc or should we just do that......muppet!!!!

Should go to Nelson and seek the advice of the Councillors there to learn how "A night life" is really created. He'll soon have the place swinging. It all goes on in Nelson y'know. LMAO

Hi There,

Ive read the negative comments that have been left over this article and a few things that i wish to point out, It was the council that invited myself to this meeting having put huge events on in the town and also Level One has just won safest Nightclub in venue in Lancashire by Lancashire Police so i was invited to this meeting from the town centre perspective.

Its almost like the keyboard warriors out their sit and await for any news to jump on a do the thing down, The Marquee event has worked in Manchester and also in Nelson Square in bolton, As the town hall has put events on outside the town hall in marquees at expense to the public the last one being a chef at 8k, My plan is to create a safe regular event where people can come down early experience some live entertainment and the plan was to have different drinks from around the would and have about 3/4 bars, this has worked in several cities and towns across the world.

Accrington now has well over 12 venues in the town centre and with the investment of 1.4 million made by weatherspoons they obviously thought it was a worth while town to invest in, The meeting is to discuss ideas.

As for who picks up the tab, well as the town centre management team are given a fund every year to re invest in the town for the public and it ends up being given back or wasted on things that do not give back to people in the town, then why is it so wrong in some peoples eyes that we organise an event of this nature of a weekly basis to boost the towns nightlife and also income for all people that work in the nightlife sector.

As for the Oakhill Park Mela, Paul Fox who co run that event who i know really well had 6 weeks with no budget to turn that event around as the funding was dropped 6 weeks before the event, And the work that was put in and the time frame they had to turn that around was a credit to everyone that was involved in doing that, And as for next year Paul has shown that he can run the event and they have given him funding back next year.

At the end of the day what we are trying to do is give back to the town and putting ideas forward to keep the towns nightlife for the future vibrant.

personally i think its a great idea, anything is worth a try to get the once thriving nightlife back.

plastic glasses is a must, thats the one main reason i avoid the town centre pubs, for fear of trouble starting and broken glasses used.

why cant people be more positive, yes agreed peel park is a decent pub, no i am not a lager lout but dont like real ales either, surely people should have a choice.

good luck at the meeting hope something comes from it

@Level one,
Reading what you have written you have proven my point about paying for it. You would rather spend money on an event that has no lasting value to the town so you can get your cut.
If you believe in this so much, why dont you pay for everything up front, eg police and cleaning, then keep the profits. Please don’t insult us by asking for tax money to be spent so you can run a risk free venture.

@Level One

The reason Accrington`s nightlife has died is due to the amount of low life in the bar`s and pub`s in Accrington,it`s as simple as that.
Decent people don`t want to spend there hard earned money on a night out having already spent time and effort getting dressed up, then having to spend it with 'people' that look like they have just walked in of a building site filthy or in tracksuits or just like they`ve been drinking all day!

The last time i was 'dragged' into Accrington by friends at xmas i watched 'doormen' in numerous bars, Level One included just watch fights go on in the bars and not intervene, then let the main individual stay in because he was somones 'mate'!!
Just because you use plastic glasses doesn`t mean you`ve a safe venue you stil let idiots in!

There is nothing worse than not feeling safe in a packed bar pub or club!!
If i want to feel safe on a night out i go to Burnley.

I moved to Accy from Glasgow earlier this year and i enjoy the night life and i've never seen any trouble that's not to say there isn't any. I've never been to Level 1 but i've been to Shakers and the bridge both of which i would say the security staff of both especially shakers have been really nice and freindly compared to what i'm used to in Glasgow and Preston.

@ Level 1 - The nightlife is only dying due to the price of beer inflating and the smoking ban! We have been running RING THE ALARM for four months and its getting bigger and bigger! Maybe open you mind and club to other genres of music rather than Kiddys disco music every weekend! BOHEMIA was RAMMED last friday!! big up all RING THE ALARM crew! x

Well done Leon and Mr fox for having some vision for helping the regeneration of the town !! Regards the marquee why not make it all day saturday with `Decent ` food and non alcoholic drinks , in the Manchester German market kind of a way, packing up at 5 and making way for the nightlife .
I know Accrington isn`t Manchester but with some good PR and held on a regular basis , Im sure people would return to Accrington once more day and night .
Regards location the front of market/town hall would seem ideal being central , large enough , no roads needing to be closed and having some character unlike Broadway .

Luna - Your event is held once a month on the last Friday of every month, the same night we hold our under 18s from 7pm - 11pm, Last Friday when you held you event Level One was rammed from 6.30pm till 6am 11.5 hours, Try organising 2 events thats were both sold old twice over and we had people queing down the street for the under 18s, and then on the silent disco, All i could see last Friday was everyone in Level One.

At least were keeping kids of the streets and working with the community, How many licensees went to the LCC Drug awareness course that was held at Accrington Police station.... Hmmmmm that would be 1 Level One .... So rather than try and make a low key advert for your event, why dont you open your mind to making your events a sell out so i can see ques down the street when running RING THE ALARM

I dont think this post is even worth a reply however i will answer all points made.

So your saying that all decent people are ashamed of their home town and would rather not come into the town, yet a multi national company JD Weatherspoons spent 1.4 million opening a new venue in the town, Without getting into a town slanging match would you like to know the town centre crime disorder figures from Burnley compared to Accrington, Saturday Nights and Fridays are buiser than Burnley now as people arent going to Burnley anymore, I was speaking to the people that were running bar Rojo and they shut it down after a few months as they said it wasnt a worth while investment to be in the town and there was always trouble, The doorstaff just watch fights and not intervene ARE YOU SERIOUS, ALL VENUES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE FULL OPERATIONAL CCTV, This is my point it is ridiculous statements like this, that is being made by someone that doesnt even visit the town and has not done for what 9 months now and yet your making a comment when you havent even been in the town recently.

At least were trying to bring something new to the town and boost the nightlife economy, I am sure the people that go out in Accrington on Saturday would have something to say that your classing them as wearing tracksuits, when as i have already pointed out you havent been in the town for 9 months, before you mock what people are doing please get your statistics and facts correct, because ours are backed up with the police

Will you be paying the police, council, LCC and other agencies for your silly idea? I think not. Its all about you trying to make a quick buck. What about street cleansing and all the other set up costs.. Why should council tax payers foot the bill for your pathetic attempt to bring life back to Accrington. Well run pubs in Accrington such as the Abbey and JD Wetherspoons appeal to families and all ages. Quality, Value, Choice is what they offer with a good safe welcoming atmosphere. Who the hell wants to be drinking 7 to 12 then move onto somewere else? Not me or others who will vote with their feet. MESSAGE TO HYNDBURN COUNCIL KICK THIS IDEA OUT NOW.This is just another ill thought out scheme with just one result to get money off people with only one thought to line your own pocket. Nice gesture would be to forget the idea and cocnentrate on encorgaing people who want to come for a night out into your Level One bar. Final thought open air drinking in Accrington town centre, excuse for more people to stay away from town....

As previously explained before the idea isnt to make a quick buck it involves all bars in the town if you had read the article, Firstly both Abbey and Weatherspoons have outside smoking and eating areas and the atmosphere is great in these.

Any huge event we put into the town will benefit all bars in the town including the Abbey & Weatherspoons.

As explained before i have been selected due to the amount of praise we have received and the award we have won for protecting our customers in the town, What i would say is that any ideas to bring extra trade into town should not be knocked when its worked in other towns.

I just get the feeling that this is yet another post by someone who probably hasnt been in the town at all, and also someone who doesnt understand the stresses and strains many bar owners across the country not just in Accrington are feeling.

At least we are doing something rather than do nothing and not plan for the future, amazes me how many people do their own town down and are so negative, when they bring no new ideas to the table.

If you have a constructive idea then please post it and i will take that idea to the meeting
