HAVING been on the road for more than four decades, The Animals must be one of the hardest-working bands around. We put some questions to band member John Steel.

DO YOU THINK YOUNG BANDS NOWADAYS HAVE AN EASY RIDE?

The hardest part is getting started - getting the breaks. In that sense, it was easier then than now, I think.

IS THE MUSIC SCENE OF TODAY AS EXCITING AS IT WAS IN THE 1960S?

I suppose that for those in the thick of the contemporary music scene it's every bit as exciting as the '60s.

HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN IS FAMOUSLY TONY BLAIR'S FAVOURITE SONG AND ALSO A POPULAR FIRST SONG IF YOU'RE LEARNING THE GUITAR. IS THIS FLATTERING?

Of course. It's great to be identified with a classic, definitive recording - 43 years and still inspiring new young musicians.

WHAT'S YOU'RE SECRET TO A LONG CAREER?

I enjoy what I do. I get paid for it and I'm allowed to drink on the job!

DO YOU GET SICK OF ALL THE TRAVELLING?

It goes with the job. Fortunately I am a lifelong reader so I lose myself in a book and time just goes by.

WHAT'S THE BEST AND WORST THINGS ABOUT BEING IN THE BAND?

Best is walking off to a standing ovation, knowing you've played well and the worst is missing your flight connection on the way to a gig.
