Walmsley AODS celebrat 80th anniversary

Walmsley AODS in a production of South Pacific

THOSE are chilly outfits for a November evening!

The picture is from a November 1965 production of South Pacific, performed by Walmsley Church AODS.

And the society are celebrating their 80th birthday this year with three productions.

They will be performing Mack and Mabel from April 28 to May 3, plus Barnum and an Amateur Kids Theatre production of Honk.

The productions will take place at the society's usual venue, the Parish Hall Theatre on Blackburn Road.

Walmsley Church AODS began life as Walmsley Sunday School Operatic Society with its first officially recorded meeting on January 9, 1928.

Their first production was The Dogs Of Devon.

The opening minutes record that it was "proposed and seconded that we keep the society together, working with the church as before."

Life in Egerton during the 20s and 30s was very different from the present. The population of the area was a fraction of what it is today, and the social impact of the motor car was still on a limited scale.

Audiences travelled to and from the shows on buses, and it was even in the minutes of one meeting that the bus company was to be asked to double its services during show week.

During World War Two, the society came to a temporary standstill as most of the members were involved in active service, but since 1945 they have gone from strength to strength.

Many members of the society are also members of Christ Church, Walmsley's, congregation and the Vicar is the president of the society. No doubt the founder members would have been delighted to see that the opening minutes from 1928 have been so successfully achieved.

Mack and Mabel tells the story of silent film producer Mack Sennet and Mabel Normand, the sandwich delivery girl he made a Hollywood star.

Starting in New York in the early 1900s it follows their rise to success in the Hollywood of the 1920s, where Mack sets up the Keystone Studios.

But will this bring them the happy ending Mack promises?

The show is directed by Nora Howcroft, musical director is David Wall and choreography is by Lara Crombie.

Tickets cost £9. For more information, ring 01204 305812 or 07817186661.
