Blackburn pizza shop switches to halal menu

A TAKEAWAY restaurant will start serving halal pizzas in an attempt to bring in more Muslim customers.

Domino’s Pizza, Whalley New Road, Roe Lee, Blackburn, has secured accreditation from the Halal Food Authority (HFA) in a bid to widen its appeal to residents in the town.

Franchisee of the Blackburn store, Slawomir Szulc, said the move towards halal pizzas was vital if the takeaway was going to have a viable future.

He said: “I am delighted to be opening a 100 per cent halal Domino’s Pizza store to better serve the needs of local residents.

“The store originally opened in October 2005 and has never performed particularly well.

"We realised that we needed to widen our appeal and target the local Muslim community.

“We tried adding in some additional pork-free toppings, but this still did not stimulate the business, potentially forcing us to close permanently.

“But, after further consideration, we chose to go all the way and reopen as a 100 per cent halal store.”

Domino’s has worked closely with the HFA, the UK’s leading accreditation authority for halal food, which has examined every stage of the pizza-making process.

The HFA also explores where ingredients are sourced from to how they are stored and prepared, ensuring Domino’s meets its strict criteria.

Masood Khawaja, president of the HFA, added: “We have been delighted to jobs" target="_blank">work with Domino’s to create this halal store.

“Our team has been extremely impressed by the company’s commitment to halal.”

The menu includes halal spicy beef, roast and tandoori chicken, halal pepperoni and halal cured turkey – all produced and stored within the HFA’s strict guidelines.

The Franchisee has admitted he needs to become halal in order to have a future. Its his business and its his choice.

Racist? that is a little bit of a crass statement to assume that everyone who will comment on here will be a racist. Does that not make you equally as bigoted as people with racist views????

Anyway, back to the subject matter and perhaps you might want to educate yourself a little bit more on the practice involved in the slaughter of animals.

funnily enough there were a piece just yesterday in the Independent website discussing the cruel slaughter of animals and the suffering involved using such a method as that used in the practices of shechita and dhabihah (jewish and muslim).

have a read, you might find it interesting and educating....

obviousley I need to be careful what I say as not to appear racist.
My comment is as long as the place meets the hygene standards set out and the food is good then no problem. I would just like to add the population of Blackburn is changing faster now than ever and its sad to see people moving out of these areas in so called white flight. Is that ok Neil ???

It's just sensible business. A large number of your potential customers are Muslim, so you serve Halal food. Or you don't get their custom.

Why is this a news story?

I cant see that this is the only reason business is poor, it could be because they are alot more expensive than other pizza takeaways. Food good, however expensive.

this place has just lost our custom, every week we used to order from there for a youth club, but after getting there "new" menu looks like pizza hut is now our place to go, at least there we can still eat ham!!!

and maybe you should get the domino website updated, as your going to LOOSE money, according to the site you still use ham, if mine came minus ham it would go right back!

Great Pizza's although they can be expensive, they do have some great deals though. They maybe would have done better if the website stated that they delivered, they have delivered to us for over a year now and it still states that they do not offer delivery. I will need to see the menu before I can comment on whether we will use in the future. Have used lots of time and have never been let down once.

Again some amazing ignorance shown by compatriots.

Just because meat is halal does not mean it is from non-stunned animals. In fact ALL the New Zealand lamb shipped to the UK is halal, but all of it from lambs that have been stunned. It's just that it's been killed by a slaughterman of one of the Abrahamic faiths.

However perhaps 1/4 or meat sold as halal hasn't been stunned and NO meat sold as kosher will have been stunned.

By the way,I agree with those who want non-stunning to be banned.

im english, and i can assure you halal meat tastes much better. i always buy halal meat now. oh just to mention this method is of the jewish relgion not just the muslims, they adopted it from the jews. Just to add stunning animals is as just as cruel. example: a scientist carried out an experiment regarding this practice of kosher/halal and stunning, he wired up two lambs on a brain ecg, after both lambs were cut, the stunned lamb was still showing brain activity, whereas the kosher/halal lamb had no brain activity. besides when meat is cut all the blood should be drained out, as we all know blood is transport medium and has everything in there including waste products. when the animal is stunned all the blood remains in the meat.

If this pizza shop serves the muslim community then it make perfect sense to use halal meat....however, some ppl who say that white ppl are racist because they don't eat halal or object to it is very shallow.....Muslimss object to our way of slaughter and therefore have their own...yet they are not seen as racist objecting to our meat. So long as each person is happy and customers are well aware of the halal meat.....and there is non halal options available to serve the non halal eaters - where is the problem? And I for one don't eat halal but would not object to muslims serving it in their community!

I cant believe people are so prejudiced and there is so much hatred towards others.

As far as Im concerned its makes perfect economic sense for any business to cater to a market and if Dominos are catering to the large muslim or Jewish community with their kosher/halal products then good on them.

And for the people of the Christian faith that maybe commenting against Dominos policy..well I should remind them that Jesus ate his meat slaughtered in the muslim/Jewish way and thats a fact as Jesus came from the jews and the jewish/islamic method of slaughter has been the norm in the part of the world Jesus came from. Thats a fact

Besides people need to leave their petty prejudices aside and stop being so pathetic and instead be civilised and respect and learn to live in harmony and that goes for all people irrespective of colour, religion or ethnicity

That's because it's rubbish. Our boss treated us to pizzas from there last year and mine was so bad (stale crust and no topping), I e-mailed Domino's head office to complain - even though it wasn't my own money wasted.

The boss has just treated us again and I thought I'd go for the safe garlic bread option. They don't even do proper garlic bread. I've had a 10p piece size bit of cheese/tomato & garlic between a load of dry crust and that's the only thing on the menu described as garlic bread.

Absolute, total, utter rubbish and I won't be bothering at all again, even if it's free!

Wouldn't it have been a better decision to incorporate TWO separate menus...? One for Muslims, the other for Non-Muslims,that way the establishment could then cater to those who actually LIKE to eat ham/pork?
If anyone considers this blokes decision to go Halal only is good does not have much idea about business...
After all,who the hell is going to use it more? The non-muslim population of course!

NadeemK, Blackburn says...

Im a muslim and Im not a fan of Dominos. Just because a place sells halal food doesnt mean muslims are going to flock there in numbers to eat only there. We see plenty of muslims eating in Pizza Hut and eating in Tiggis because they like the food there even though the establishments sell non halal/kosher food and theres plenty of alternative halal places in Blackburn.

Theres alot of halal take-aways and restaurants in Blackburn yet I know lots of muslims wouldent go to eat there as the place and food is rubbish.

Its all about the quality and taste of the food and all Dominos are doing is giving an extra option to cater for the large muslims community. Im sure Dominos will still be selling pork/ham pizzas and good on them as they need to consider and cater to all religeous and cultural groups. Its only ethical and good business sense.

I cant believe the amount of hatred and animosity and racism displayed. Its utterly pathetic and all those complaining about the halal/kosher slaughtering method..well shooting or electrocuting animals in water exactly isnt humane. I suggest all those moaning about the halal/kosher slaughter method are vegetarians or vegans which Im sure they probably arnt.
