UNIQUE is a much over-used word, hardly ever justified but one which lazy reviewers will throw in for no good reason.

However, this show - a stage version of Jeff Wayne’s cult concept album from 1978 - justly deserves the accolade.

Don’t believe me?

Then which other show have you seen which offers a 36-piece string orchestra and 10-piece rock band live on stage together, a 100-foot video screen showing animation and live action throughout, a 3D hologram of Richard Burton’s head floating above the arena - oh yes and a 35-foot high Martian fighting machine descending from the skies to fire sheets of flame at the audience?

Yes, you have to suspend disbelief, but what a show.

Based on HG Well’s classic tale, it featured Justin Hayward, who featured on the original recording; Jason Donovan; former Atomic Kitten Liz McLarnon; and X-Factor finalist Rhyddian as the preacher.

Looking at all the elements you’d doubt if this could ever work.

But the whole thing is brilliant.

From Wayne’s haunting score, given an added dimension by all those musicians, to the stunning visual effects it’s a treat from start to finish.
