Poor Max Cunningham. If ever there was a character who has no luck, it’s him.

He finally finds the woman of his dreams, and before she even makes it to the altar to marry him, he dies! Yes I tuned into Hollyoaks last night for the first time in years after hearing about the departure of one of the original characters, who I remember from when I was a fan.

And I must say to all the critics of Hollyoaks who say the Channel Four tea time programme is past its best and should be scrapped, they are wrong.

I never thought I’d say this but the acting last night was actually pretty good.

So much so I found myself crying when Max, who has been in the show for 11 years, died in the arms of his best friend, OB.

Helpfully the producers of Hollyoaks possibly realised that many ex-fans of the show would be tuning in for the first time in a good while and used large amounts of flashbacks to recent weeks’ programmes to help us.

We were completely up to speed with his feelings for Max’s new wife, and watched his departure without feeling like we’d missed anything.

They must be doing something right, if you haven’t watched a programme for five years, have no clue who most of the characters are, but tune in as a one-off and be totally moved by the scenes that unfold before you. Well done Hollyoaks!
