Police are warning elderly residents across South Ribble to be on their guard after a "bogus official"-type burglary took place in Penwortham last week.
The incident happened on Hawkesbury Drive on Thursday, March 20, at around 4.30pm.
The two male offenders entered a property via an insecure door.
Once inside they were disturbed by the aggrieved. The men said they were from the water board.
One distracted the wife into the kitchen running the hot tap while the second r entered the bedroom watched by the husband. The offenders then stated the water was fine and left the house empty handed.
It was after they left that the aggrieved noticed drawers had been opened and raised the alarm.
It is believed the offenders also visited two other properties on Hawkesbury Drive prior to the incident offering gardening work at one address but were turned away.
A witness has already told police two males were seen getting into a small black car, either a Peugeot or a Fiesta, shortly after the incident.

DC Donna Brown, who is investigating, said: "We strongly advise people to be on their guard against this type of theft.
"Never allow anyone into your home unless you are happy that they are there for a genuine reason.
"If you are not happy do not let them in. Always ask for id and if need be check with the organisation they say they are from - most organisations now make appointments for workmen to call.
"If you see anything suspicious contact the police. Also do not leave doors unlocked. Fortunately the elderly lady and gentleman were not hurt in anyway but were shaken up by the incident."
The men were described as both speaking with Irish accents, of slim build and wearing gloves.
One was described as white, 5ft 8ins in his early 20s, with dark, curly tight hair and wearing a dark jacket.
The other was white, with cropped blonde hair. He was wearing blue jeans with a white t-shirt.
Anyone who may have been in the area or seen anything suspicious when this incident occurred are asked to contact DC Donna Brown on 01772 415842, or via Southern Communications Centre on 0845 1253545.
