A FORMER miner in the pits of Yorkshire is appealing to old Lancashire colleagues for help with his hobby.

Bill Bennett, who worked underground for 33 years and is now retired, collects colliery checks or tallies.

These are brass discs, usually embossed with the individual colliery name, and stamped with the miner's own number.

They were used as a safety measure to record the number of men underground at any one time.

Bill has many from the Yorkshire coalfields, but very few from Lancashire and is seeking checks from the old Burnley and Darwen collieries.

In particular, he would like checks from Grime Bridge and Old Meadows.

If you can help Bill, you can contact him in Rotherham, on 01709 896200.
