10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, September 2, 2000 SUMMER holidays could have been a washout for youngsters on Bolton’s Hall i’th’ Wood Estate, if not for a generous gran who stepped in to fill the breach left by the council.
Big-hearted resident Rita Lilley, aged 58, who was recovering from illness at the time, came to the rescue when she discovered youngsters on the estate would be left with nothing to do on the long summer days after a council-run play scheme failed to materialise.
And for the past five weeks Rita and friend Margaret Bevan have been selflessly keeping scores of youngsters occupied with their own summer school.
Rita and Margaret, members of the Hall i’th’ Wood Residents’ Association, were shocked to discover that the play scheme would not be taking place.
The children have been kept occupied through a host of activities including face painting, arts and crafts, and games.
25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, September 3, 1985 CHAOS came to Bolton roads today with traffic jams and snarl-ups caused by the closure of St Peter’s Way to Bolton bound traffic.
The worst affected spots were Farnworth town centre and the Manchester Road-Raikes Lane junction where traffic was bumper to bumper for three-quarters of a mile until the situation was improved by a motorcycle policemen who over-rode traffic signals. Farnworth town centre was choked with slow moving traffic as many motorists ignored motorway diversion signs and came off the M16 at Farnworth/Kearsley roundabout.
Bury New Road and Bradford Street leading up to the Manchester Road junction were also bottlenecks.
But the chaos anticipated by the resurfacing work on the by-pass was not as bad as had been expected, though many town centre workers were late for work.
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News September 3 1960 Three boys who appeared at Radcliffe Juvenile Court yesterday, charged with stealing timber and tools told the magistrates they had taken them to make themselves a bogie.
