Golf pair closer to Mecca

A DUO of tiny golfers are carrying the flag for a club in a national junior tournament.

Eight-year-old Danial Naqvi and Jonathan Gerrish, six, from Shooters Hill Golf Club have won a place in the Wee Wonders regional finals after triumphing in the qualifiers.

Should they win in their respective age categories, the pair could be gracing the golf Mecca which is St Andrews in Scotland in the grand final.

Danial, from Shooters Hill, won the seven to eight-year-old category regional qualifier at North Foreland Golf Club, Broadstairs.

Meanwhile Jonathan, from Mottingham, hit his way to glory in the five to six-year-old age group at Mannings Heath Golf Club, Horsham The pair are the youngest youth members of Shooters Hill Golf Club and are hard in training for the regional final being held at Burgess Hill, West Sussex.

Wee Wonders has a format specially designed for youngsters with each player having 36 shots to get as far into a par three course as they can.

Jonathan won by reaching the seventh hole while Danial hit all the way to the ninth.

Danial's father, Amber, said: "Burgess Hill is a different prospect as they have long par threes and a lot of water to carry.

"We're working on his long game at the moment and are quietly hopeful he'll reach the final."

Wee Wonders has nine regional qualifying groups and only 20 golfers from each age category can reach the grand final.
